Nano Kudos
A slender, kinetic construction designed by world-renowned architect, sculptor, and engineer Dr Santiago Calatrava stands tall on campus and is dedicated to the memory of Russell Berrie - humanitarian, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. The sculpture recognizes the unprecedented contributions made by the Russell Berrie Foundation to Technion in establishing the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute, which reflects Russ’s vision of Israel as a world leader in transformational science. Its official inauguration, in the presence of esteemed representatives from the Berrie Foundation, will take place during Technion’s annual Board of Governors session in June 2009 as the first event of Technion’s 85th anniversary festivities. The Technion Nano Bible
On May 11 at the official welcoming ceremony at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, President Shimon Peres presented the unique gift of the Technion Nano Bible to Pope Benedict XVI when His Holiness commenced his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Read more
Sensing the Future
Mad-cow disease, listeria, e-coli, salmonella… there is no shortage of threats to our health and safety at the human end of the food chain. Whether through deliberate acts of sabotage or human error occurring in the blind swell of mass production, the need for effective, fast and economic methods to keep our food safe was indicated in new legislation drawn up by the European Community known as “from farm to fork”. Yet food and water monitoring is just one potential application of the exciting nano-bio-materials research going on at Dr Ester Segal’s new lab at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering. By drilling nano-sized pores in hard matter porous silicon and filling them with specific organic polymers, she is lighting the way for the biosensors and drug delivery systems of tomorrow. Read more
