Technikum vs. Technion

Cornerstone laying of the Haifa Technikum,
April 1912
A fascinating historical exhibition on the founding of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology and the ensuing controversy over the language of instruction (German or Hebrew) is showcased at Haifa City Museum from March through August 2011. The eventual victory for Hebrew was a defining moment in the crystallization of the embryonic Jewish state’s national identity.

Exhibits include early documents, photographs, and additional artifacts from the time the German Aid Society chose to establish a technical institute in this bleak corner of what was then the Ottoman Empire to the time that Technion opened its doors to the first intake of students (1908-1924).
